What TIME does the Teacher Job Fair begin?
In-person fair: 9:30am to 1:30pm
Can I register the DAY OF the fair?
You can register on the day of the fair but it takes time to register so we HIGHLY RECOMMEND registering ahead of time – make sure your cell phone is fully charged and bring a portable charger as you will have to download the Know.Careers app to register on the day of the fair! Download on the App Store or Get it on Google Play
Is there WI-FI available?
There will be Wi-Fi available for you to register on the day of the fair and to view the floor map but we HIGHLY RECOMMEND registering well ahead of time!
What should I BRING with me to the fair?
– RESUME: Visit your college/university career center and have your resume reviewed by a professional. Bring 5-10 printed copies – you may want to bring more depending on your certification area and how long you can spend at the fair. If it is more than one page, please staple it. We recommend some sort of portfolio/folder to keep your resumes in so they stay protected. Fancy/heavy resume paper or stationery is NOT required; plain white printing paper is perfectly acceptable. Business cards are NOT required, but you may bring them if you choose. You do NOT need cover letters for this event. Recruiters see hundreds, if not thousands, of resumes during hiring seasons, and you want yours to be as strong as possible – We recommend contacting your college/university career center well in advance of the fair to ensure you are able to schedule an appointment.
– CELL PHONE: (put your ringer on silent!) Make sure it’s fully charged, and if possible bring a portable charger with you. Yes, this isn’t what you would expect to be told to bring to a career fair, but a lot of information about the event is on the Know.Careers app (Download on the App Store or Get it on Google Play). There will be information on the attending employers, a floor map to help you navigate the fair, and you will be able to follow up with employers you weren’t able to connect with in person.
– PROFESSIONALISM: Dress as you would for an in-person interview. This is your chance to make a good impression on potential future employers, so leave your jeans/casual wear at home. Make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing and that your clothes fit well (i.e. nothing you need to readjust throughout the day). You will likely be standing throughout the day for long periods, so choose your footwear accordingly. The night before the fair, make sure you have whatever you’ll need to make it through the day (medications, chargers, mints, personal items, etc.). Be sure to turn your phone’s ringer off prior to approaching recruiters. We suggest you leave your coat in the car.
It may be that your only contact with a particular employer at the Greater Philadelphia Teacher Job Fair will be limited to a short discussion at a table or an unscheduled chance meeting some other time during the day. Remember that your discussions should be equally as professional as they would be during a fully scheduled employment interview.
– A PLAN: Our #1 recommendation (outside of bringing copies of your resume and dressing professionally!) is to do your research on the schools/districts ahead of time to scope out which ones will be there and make lists of your top 10/20/etc. schools. Lines will form quickly (especially for Lower Merion, Radnor, and other Philly/suburb-area schools) and you want to be sure you have a game plan of what tables are must-sees for you. Given the lines and the number of people attending, you will not be able to visit every table, so strategize before you arrive!
– GOOD VIBES: This fair offers one of the best chances to meet and network with districts in our area and beyond, so enter with a positive mindset. Think about all the great moments you’ve had in the classroom along the way and why you chose this course of study. Recruiters are looking for people who have a passion for the field of education and who genuinely love working with kids/young adults, so keep that in mind as you meet them.
– SNACK: Bring a water bottle and a snack that you can eat once you arrive. There will NOT be any food to purchase at the fair.
Will there be FOOD to purchase?
No. Eat breakfast the morning of the fair, even if you’re nervous or not hungry. (Or at least bring a granola bar or something portable you can eat once you get there.) There will NOT be food there for you to purchase! You can take a break at your leisure.
What can I EXPECT at the Teacher Job Fair?
This fair is one of the largest of its kind in the Tri-State area, so you can expect over 200 tables where school district representatives from PA, NJ, DE (and other states across the country) can speak with you about their anticipated needs and your interests and qualifications. You will be able to speak with them briefly on a first come – first served basis. After these initial conversations, some employers will schedule individual interviews. Other representatives will only be collecting resumes and noting first impressions for their use in selecting candidates for interviewing at a later date. Be prepared for long lines at the tables of Philadelphia-area suburban school districts. We encourage you to branch out in your search to maximize your opportunities for interviews. Name tags will be provided upon entrance – Be sure to write your name boldly & clearly on your nametag.
What is the KNOW.CAREERS app?
Know.Careers is assisting the DVEC with hosting the Teacher Job Fair. Candidates must register for the event on the app to be able to attend. Once registered, candidates will be able to view the employers who will be attending the event, as well as a floor map to see where the candidate tables are located. After the in-person fair has concluded, candidates and employers will still have the ability to connect via the Know.Careers app for a period of time. CLICK HERE FOR A SHORT VIDEO
